Testing quote-and-buy means proving that customers can get an accurate quote, buy cover, pay and receive their documents through every route the insurer offers: its own website and app, price comparison sites, partner embeds and click-throughs. Custom front ends change faster than almost any other part of the estate, and every change can alter the questions asked, the price shown or the policy bound.
Most insurers build their own quote-and-buy front ends on top of core and rating APIs, and integrate with price comparison sites and partners. These journeys carry the most visible risk in personal lines: the price, the purchase and the first impression. This page covers what to test and how Touchstone tests it.
What Makes Quote-and-Buy Journeys Risky?
They change constantly, they are the first point of contact with customers, they sit on top of rating and policy services, and they must match the price and terms offered through every other channel. Small changes to questions, defaults or validation can change prices, eligibility or the data the policy is bound on.
Frequent releases. Front-end teams ship often, sometimes daily, with marketing and conversion changes.
Question sets. Questions, defaults and help text drive rating and eligibility.
Multiple routes. Direct web and app, comparison site click-throughs, partner embeds and agent-assisted journeys.
Regulated outcomes. Pricing practices, disclosures and consumer understanding apply to what customers see.
What Should You Test in Quote-and-Buy Journeys?
Test the full purchase, not just the quote: question flow, validation, price, options, payment, bind and documents, through every route and on the browsers and devices customers use. Then check that the policy bound matches what the customer saw and agreed to.
Area | What to test | Defects that commonly escape |
|---|---|---|
Question flow and validation | Questions shown by answer path; validation messages; defaults | A default changes a rating factor without the customer knowing |
Pricing | Price for each risk and option against approved rating | Price differs from the rating engine after a front-end change |
Channel parity | Same risk via direct, comparison click-through and partner routes | One route more expensive than approved |
Options and add-ons | Optional covers and add-on prices | Add-on price wrong or not added to the policy |
Payment | Card and Direct Debit, monthly and annual | Payment taken but policy not bound, or the reverse |
Bind and documents | Policy created with the agreed details; documents delivered | Policy bound on different answers from those shown |
Accessibility and devices | Key journeys across browsers, devices and assistive technologies | A journey unusable on a common mobile browser or with a screen reader |
How Should Price Comparison Feeds Be Tested?
Test every question and answer mapping between each comparison site's request and your quote service, compare prices for the same risk with your direct channel, and test the click-through that carries the customer from the comparison site into your journey.
Each comparison site is a separate channel for UK home and motor pricing rules, so test each one separately.
Priorities:
Request mapping for each comparison site, including unanswered and new questions.
Price parity with direct, with differences explained by approved channel rules.
Referral and decline responses in each site's expected format.
Click-through data and price carried into your journey intact.
Renewal pricing for customers who first bought through each site.
How Does Virtuoso QA Touchstone Test Quote-and-Buy Journeys?
Touchstone tests quote-and-buy end to end: browser journeys through your website, including mobile web, across browsers, API steps for comparison site requests, and data checks confirming the bound policy matches what the customer saw. Synthetic risk libraries drive the same journeys across many risks, and front-end releases are traced to the journeys they affect.
Two boundaries are worth stating plainly. Native mobile apps are outside Touchstone's scope, so for app-based purchases the outcome is checked at the API and in the policy system rather than on the app screen. And embedded payment and partner widgets often use nested iframes or shadow DOM, which are workable but higher friction, so some of those steps may need a person to guide the journey.
The Analyst reads question set specifications, rating guides, comparison site mappings and front-end change tickets, and proposes requirements, each citing its source.
The Architect builds journeys for each route (direct, comparison click-through, partner) through quote, options, payment, bind and documents.
The Autopilot runs those journeys across browser and device combinations on a deterministic engine on every front-end release.
Self-healing execution absorbs routine front-end changes, while changed behaviour surfaces as failed requirements.
Data checks confirm the price and the policy bound match what was shown.
From the first quote through bind, billing and claims, Virtuoso QA’s insurance testing keeps the policy a customer buys online consistent with every system behind it.
Illustrative Scenario: A Conversion Change and a Hidden Default
This scenario is illustrative and does not describe a specific firm.
A UK home insurer's digital team simplifies its quote journey to improve conversion, hiding an optional question about previous subsidence behind a link. The question now defaults to "no".
Touchstone's quote journeys pass on screen, but the data checks on the bound policy show that the subsidence answer was never actively given by the customer, and the underwriting requirement says it must be. The design is changed so the question is answered explicitly before purchase, and the evidence shows the requirement, the failed check and the fix.
